FWC issues executive order to reopen recreational harvest of greater amberjack in state waters of the Gulf of Mexico from May 1 – May 31
Tuesday, April 23, 2024 - NOAA Fisheries is reopening Gulf federal waters because landings indicate the recreational quota for greater amberjack has not been met and the FWC is also opening state waters to be consistent with the federal season. -
FWC, local, state and federal agencies thwart human smugglers offshore Miami-Dade County
Monday, April 22, 2024 - Aboard a 60-foot yacht were approximately 30 migrants of Haitian nationality and two alleged human smugglers. All were taken into custody and turned over to the U.S. Coast Guard for repatriation. -

ICYMI: Biologists Rescue Sawfish in the Florida Keys
Friday, April 12, 2024 - An endangered smalltooth sawfish is recovering today after being rescued from Cudjoe Key and transported to Mote Marine Laboratory’s facility yesterday. A member of the public reported the animal swimming in circles in Cudjoe Bay. Biologists with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and Mote Marine Laboratory responded to the distressed sawfish. They completed a quick field assessment that included taking samples, measurements, and tagging, before making the rescue decision. The sawfish was loaded onto a vessel and provided respiratory assistance during the short boat ride to a temporary holding tank. -

Friday, April 12, 2024 - Coastal Conservation Association Florida (CCA Florida), the state’s leading organization dedicated to marine fisheries conservation, education and advocacy, joined the Duke Energy Mariculture Center and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) to kick off the 2024 Redfish Film Fest and release 50 hatchery-reared, adult redfish (averaging 18 to 27 inches in length) off the waters of Bay County on Thursday, in effort to combat the decreasing population along Florida’s West Coast. -
