Want to help FWC conserve Florida’s black bears, but not sure how you can help?
- Learn about your Bear Management Unit (BMU)
- Learn how to be BearWise by securing your attractants
- Request a presentation from FWC staff for your community and/or civic group
- If your county or city is in bear country, contact them about practicing BearWise principles, adding educational materials to their webpages for existing and new residents and passing BearWise waste management ordinances. Here are a couple examples of local governments with bear specific webpages: Seminole County and Volusia County.
- Buy a Conserve Wildlife License plate. The proceeds not only benefit bears, but many other Florida wildlife species through a competitive grant program overseen by the Fish and Wildlife Foundation of Florida.
- Attend a local environmental event, such as the Earth Day Festival in Fort Walton Beach
- Assist FWC record bear locations by reporting your bear observations (e.g. sighting, tracks, scat) while hiking, camping, bird watching, or paddling in Florida
- Share FWC’s Bear Wise messaging through social media
- Inquire about Bear Management Program volunteer or internship opportunities
- Sign up for GovDelivery, a free service that will email or text you updates on any state government related topics of your choosing, including wildlife like bears
