Crocodilian Research
The FWC Crocodilian Research Program dates back to 1974, with a single research biologist in the Bureau of Wildlife Research in the Florida Game and Freshwater Fish Commission (GFC). The program’s goal was, and still is, to provide the information needed to make science-based management decisions regarding Florida’s crocodilians. Since that time, the GFC was reorganized into the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission in 1999, with Crocodilian Research joining the new Fish and Wildlife Research Institute in 2004. FWC crocodilian research projects include not only American alligators, but American crocodiles as well, Florida’s other native crocodilian species.
