J. W. Corbett WMA ORV Issues
Off-road Vehicle Use Issues and Related Damage
J.W. Corbett Wildlife Management Area protects over 60,000 acres in Palm Beach County with the goal of conserving wildlife for current and future generations to enjoy. Visitors to Corbett WMA can enjoy activities such as hunting, fishing and wildlife viewing. Corbett WMA is also home to special features such as the Ocean to Lake Trail, the Everglades Youth Conservation Camp and the Bald Cypress Boardwalk.
Off-Road Vehicle Concerns
Historically, the impacts of off-road vehicle use were relatively minor; however, the popularity of off-road vehicle use and its related damage have increased over recent years. The images on this page show damage to the WMA.
The tight circles seen in these photos are caused by vehicles such as 4x4 off-road vehicles, modified trucks and side-by-side sport utility vehicles. Swamp buggies used for hunting also have increased in size and speed over the years. Inappropriate use can result in other patterns of damage, such as rings around wetlands.
Fire and water shape this landscape. Many animals are adapted to the habitats created by these natural forces. Over time, the rutting and erosion caused by off-road vehicles can permanently damage vegetation and inhibit the natural flow of water. The influence of the damage extends beyond the immediate footprint of the scar. Bare ground interrupts prescribed fires that maintain healthy wildlife habitat.
Proposed Solutions
The FWC is reaching out to WMA visitors to create awareness of this problem. The FWC is also proposing changes to current off-road vehicle use on the area. These changes would result in all vehicle use being limited to named roads and numbered trails during hunting periods. Outside of hunting periods, motor vehicles would be allowed on named roads only. The FWC is also incorporating additional trails within the area to help ensure continued vehicle access for hunters. We encourage everyone who values and enjoys Corbett WMA to become part of the solution.
