Gopher Tortoise

The gopher tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus) is a long-lived, terrestrial turtle found in upland habitats throughout Florida. This keystone species digs burrows that are used by more than 360 other animals. Read about gopher tortoise research conducted by our staff.
