Florida Gray Squirrel and Rabbit Hunting
Get started small-game hunting
Getting started in hunting is easier than you may think, and hunting gray squirrels or rabbits is the perfect way to begin. Hunting these species also provides a great opportunity for seasoned hunters to recruit new conservationists by passing on our hunting heritage to youth or adults new to hunting. It can even provide a window back into the outdoors for lapsed hunters with busy lifestyles.
Gray squirrel and rabbit hunting usually requires less planning and gear than hunting other species. All you need is a little preparation, a place to go and a shotgun, .22-caliber rifle or airgun.
You can find good places to hunt close by on small tracts of private and public land, many of which are convenient to major urban areas. Florida’s public hunting system totals nearly 6 million acres with over 160 wildlife management areas (WMAs). Most of these WMAs offer a small-game hunting season where quota permits are not required. All you need is a hunting license and management area permit.
