Ochlockonee River
Leon, Gadsden and Liberty counties
Located west of Tallahassee, the Florida portion of this river is noted for its Redbreast Sunfish fishery in periods of low water and catfish during high water events, as well as for its black crappie angling. The best fishing times generally occur in spring and summer when water levels are low. This river is shallow, narrow, and scenic over most of its stretch to the gulf coast. It is a good river to canoe and fish with abundant snags and deep water holes. Fishing for Redbreast Sunfish and Bluegill should pickup as water temperatures rise. Try targeting areas around fallen trees or brush piles with a cane pole using live wigglers or crickets. Striped Bass will begin their migrations by April. Target sections of the river with current in the lower reaches of the river and near the dam with flukes, live shad, or topwater plugs. Be aware of back current due to the operation of flood gates. Catfishing should also be great this time of year and can be caught using stink bait on the bottom.
