Red Tide Education and Information

Red Tides in Florida

Red tides, also called harmful algal blooms (HABs), occur when microscopic algae multiply to higher-than-normal concentrations, often discoloring the water. Although more than 50 HAB species occur in the Gulf, one of the most well-known species is Karenia brevis, the red tide organism.

K. brevis produces brevetoxins capable of killing fish, birds, and other marine animals. Brevetoxins may also cause health problems in humans, including respiratory irritation when wave action breaks open cells and the toxins become airborne. People who consume shellfish contaminated with brevetoxins can suffer Neurotoxic Shellfish Poisoning.

Red Tide and Food Webs Supplemental Activity

The following Red Tide and Food Webs supplemental activity is the result of a recommendation from the Harmful Algal Bloom Task Force (F.S. 379.2271), a group of scientists, engineers, economists, members of citizen groups, and members of government.

The documents align with the Florida Department of Education Standards and are designed for middle school-aged students. The materials can be used in both formal and non-formal education programs.

Request FWC for an Educational Event. Our staff enjoy bringing their harmful algal bloom (HAB) knowledge to outreach events for adults and children. We have lots of different activities, materials, and presentations depending on the age of the group. If you would like to request HAB staff come to an event you are organizing, please contact Information@MyFWC.com, along with details of the event.

Get Involved! If you or someone you know would like to become involved with FWRI as an intern or volunteer, please check out the Internships and Volunteers page for additional information.

We hope these materials provide your students with valuable insight into Red Tide!

If you have any questions or comments about the Red Tide Supplemental Activity Materials, please reach out to us at HAB_Edu@MyFWC.com.
