Appearance
- Color is silver and iridescent, sometimes with brassy highlights
- Front of head very steep
- Pelvic fins small
- Elongated front filaments of second dorsal fin and anal fin
- Body extremely compressed and deep (plate-like)
- Lateral line arched toward front
- Juveniles with spines on front of dorsal fin and elongated rays on pelvic fin

Size: Up to 12 inches
Habitat
Coastal waters and estuaries over hard or sandy bottom
Behavior
Juveniles have faint vertical bars that fade with age
