Nasal Bots

Nasal bots are the larvae form of bot flies, Cephenemyia spp.

Adult female flies deposit small larvae on the skin of the nose and mouth of white-tailed deer.  Larvae develop and migrate into the nasal passages where they develop further.  Eventually fully developed larvae will exit the deer (possibly through a sneeze) and pupate in the ground to complete their life cycle.  Bot larval infections appear to be relatively common in white-tailed deer in Florida and even in large quantities do not cause harm to deer.  Deer with bot infestations are no harm to humans.
