Red Tide Videos

Red Tide in Florida

Red Tide in Florida

Red tide often affects the Gulf Coast of Florida during certain times of the year, like late summer. Not sure what that means for you, your family, and your pets? This video will teach you everything you need to know: what red tide is, red tide’s affects on health, and how we track and monitor red tide.

As part of an ongoing education effort on red tide research, FWRI recently created an animated video on red tide in Florida’s marine and estuarine waters. This video is intended for residents and visitors and covers three main topics:

  • What is red tide?
  • Is red tide dangerous to humans?
  • How do we track red tide?

Available as a single video or as three shorter stand-alone videos focused on each topic, these easy-to-access resources can be readily shared to help provide critical education leading up to and during red tide events.

The video is intended for a variety of audiences, from vacationers with little knowledge of red tide to long-time residents who wish to know more about the phenomenon and how it’s tracked.

The full video and three shorter stand-alone videos are also available in Spanish:

In 2020, the reactivated Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) Task Force identified a need in their first consensus document for communication efforts to better educate the public about red tide and other HABs. In response, the FWC HAB Grants program funded the “Developing a Communications Strategy for Red Tide in Florida” study conducted by Florida Sea Grant and a HAB communication working group was formed. This video was created, in part, to address some of the group’s recommendations.

Seafood Safety

Red Tide and Seafood Safety

Red tide blooms can have far-reaching effects in our environment, and this includes fish caught by anglers that can be impacted by red tide. Watch this next installment in our red tide video series to learn all about red tide and seafood safety.

The next installment in the red tide educational video series, Seafood Safety, is now available to the public. Following our recent animated video on red tide in Florida’s marine and estuarine waters, the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute has developed a video covering safe seafood practices during a red tide bloom. This information is intended for residents and visitors and covers three main topics:

  • Can I eat my catch?
  • Can I order seafood from a restaurant?
  • I think I ate tainted seafood. What should I do?

Available as a single video or as three shorter stand-alone videos focused on each topic, these easy-to-access resources can be readily shared to help provide critical education leading up to and during red tide events.

The information is intended for a variety of audiences, from vacationers with little knowledge of red tide to long-time residents who wish to know more about staying safe when consuming seafood in the presence of red tide.
