My research focuses on evaluating new methods and technologies for regulatory shellfish testing. I am involved in the state’s shellfish biotoxin testing program and I perform all phases of sample preparation for the detection of marine algal toxins in seafood, seawater, and other environmental matrices. Research incorporates use of various analytical techniques like ELISA assays, HPLC, and LC-MS. Along with that, I am also tasked with developing, implementing, and maintaining QA/QC guidelines for analysis of Paralytic Shellfish Toxins in shellfish using HPLC-FL.
For my Ph.D., I investigated the role of ammonium in Alexandrium fundyense (red tides) blooms in the Gulf of Maine and on Georges Bank. My work involved designing and conducting phytoplankton growth and nutrient uptake experiments. My research also encompassed identifying various phytoplankton found in the Gulf of Maine and on Georges Bank and assessing the phytoplankton community structure.
