What data does CREMP collect?

CREMP collects data on population demographics, health conditions, and benthic community assemblage cover. Our data can be used to calculate stony coral and octocoral abundance, density, and diversity, as well as live tissue area for stony corals. Explore what kinds of data CREMP collects below.

  • Maximum diameter (cm)
  • Maximum height (cm)
  • Old mortality (%)
  • Tissue isolates
  • Condition type (tissue loss, color loss, discoloration, growth anomaly, or mucus sheathing)
  • Condition distribution (focal, multifocal, diffuse, or whole)
  • Percent affected by condition
  • Tissue loss-caused percent recent mortality
  • Tissue loss rate (acute/fast or chronic/slow)
  • Tissue loss margin (tissue-skeleton regular, tissue-skeleton irregular, color loss, discoloration, or band)
  • Skeletal damage (presence/absence)
  • Condition type (including bleaching, disease, biological interactions, etc.)
  • Juvenile coral tallies
  • Maximum height (cm)
  • Damage (presence/absence)
  • Old mortality (%)
  • Condition type (tissue loss, color loss, discoloration, or growth anomaly)
  • Condition distribution (focal, multifocal, or diffuse)
  • Percent affected by condition
  • Tissue loss-caused recent mortality (%)
  • Tissue loss margin (tissue-exposed axis, band, or discoloration)
  • Condition type (including predation, disease, biological interactions, etc.)
  • Predators present (presence/absence)
  • Percent cover of benthic organisms, including individual stony coral species, macroalgae, sponges, octocorals, and other common benthic organisms.
  • See the “Point Count Standard Operating Procedures” for complete list of species, complexes, and groups assessed for percent cover.
  • Top-down photographs of the entire transect
  • Panoramic photos at the offshore stake looking down the transect, roughly 180-degrees with the stake in the middle of the photo

CREMP Data Dashboard

CREMP data for all three monitoring regions can be visualized on the CREMP Data Dashboard

Use the filter tabs on the top right to filter the exhibited data by region, sub-region, habitat, and site. Explore metrics on stony corals, octocorals, and benthic category percent cover. Click on the map to view the location of CREMP monitoring sites view detailed data by year. Before using the dashboard, click on the arrow on the middle left of the screen to view a "how-to" guide for tips on how to fully utilize the dashboard.
