Homosassa Wildlife Management Area

Managed in cooperation with the Florida Forest Service.

Homosassa Wildlife Management Area (WMA) consists of more than 5,000 acres in southwest Citrus County between the Homosassa and Chassahowitzka rivers and near the Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge. The area is a management unit of the Withlacoochee State Forest and consists of forested wetlands, planted pines, and improved pastures.  Hunting of white-tailed deer, wild hogs, migratory birds, small game, and turkey is permitted in season. Bicycling, hiking, and wildlife viewing are permitted on the area and there is a designated hiking trail. Wildlife on this area include white-tailed deer, wild hogs, wild turkey and wood duck. Horseback riding and camping are prohibited. This area is a site on the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail.

Rules Regarding Dogs

  • For purposes other than hunting, dogs are allowed, but must be kept under physical restraint at all times. Dogs are prohibited in areas posted as "Closed to Public Access" by FWC administrative action. No person shall allow any dog to pursue or molest any wildlife during any period in which the taking of wildlife by the use of dogs is prohibited.
  • Hunting dogs may be taken onto the WMA after 8 a.m. the day before the opening of a season and shall be removed by 6 p.m. one day after the end of the season. Hunting deer or wild hog with dogs is prohibited. Hunting with dogs is prohibited, except bird dogs or dogs with a shoulder height of 15 inches or less. Dogs are prohibited in areas posted as "Closed to Public Access" by FWC administrative action. No person shall allow any dog to pursue or molest any wildlife during any period in which the taking of wildlife by the use of dogs is prohibited. Dogs on leashes may be used for trailing wounded game.
