Freshwater Fisheries Special Activity Permits

Scientific Research, Education/Exhibition, and Management

The Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's Division of Freshwater Fisheries Management issues freshwater fisheries special activities permits under the authority of rule 68A-9.002 and 68A-9.003, Florida Administrative Code.

Who needs a permit?

Individuals, institutions, or private businesses who desire to harvest, collect, or possess freshwater fish species for justifiable purposes with fishing devices or equipment that otherwise would be in violation of one or more of the state’s freshwater fisheries regulations.  Permits are issued based on the applicant's county and not on the collection locality.

What doesn't this permit cover?

  • The collection and possession of non-native conditional or prohibited species as defined in rule 68-5, F.A.C.
  • The collection and possession of state and federal endangered or threatened species as defined in rule 68A-27, F.A.C.
  • The collection and possession of freshwater fish for the purpose of sale, barter, or trade.
