Hemp Key CWA is located in the J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge Complex, between Pine Island and North Captiva Island. It supports the largest colonial wading and diving bird rookery in Pine Island Sound and is included in the Charlotte Harbor Colonial Waterbird Monitoring Program.

Financial support for Hemp Key Critical Wildlife Area in-water markers was provided by the Fish & Wildlife Foundation of Florida, Inc. through the Conserve Wildlife Tag grant program.
