The gopher frog (Lithobates capito) is a medium-sized Ranid - true frog - found throughout much of the state. This species breeds in ephemeral wetlands in sandhill and scrub habitats but spends most of its time living in the uplands, using burrows made by other species - especially gopher tortoises - for refuge. Gopher frogs were delisted in Florida in 2017, but we continue to monitor this species to ensure their continued success.
