The current status of the Harlequin Darter is State Species of Special Concern.

In 2017, the FWC convened a biological review group (BRG) to reassess the status of the harlequin darter. Based on results from recent research in population demographics, FWC staff recommended the harlequin darter be removed from the Florida Endangered and Threatened Species List as a Species of Special Concern based on the BRG’s findings.

Horseshoe crabs do not bite or sting. Despite the ferocious look of the tail, it is not used as a weapon, but to right themselves if they are flipped over by a wave.
