April 7, 2008
Contact: Gabriella Ferraro, 772-215-9459
Biologists with the Florida Fish and Wildlife
Conservation Commission (FWC) will stock 15,400 sunshine bass
into the Osborne chain of lakes on Tuesday, April 8.
Sunshine bass are hatchery-produced by FWC
biologists and stocked in selected rivers and lakes.
Sunshine bass were developed by the FWC with two goals in mind.
The first was to create and maintain a new fishery that would
supplement existing native species. The second goal was to
control abundant gizzard shad populations in nutrient-rich
lakes.
The stocks of sunshine bass will be divided
between five lakes: Lake Catherine (400), Lake Clark (1,400),
Lake Ida (3,000), Lake Osborne (10,000) and Lake Pine (600).
For the best photo or video opportunity, meet at
the boat ramp at John Prince Park, on the north side of Lake
Osborne in Lake Worth, between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Call
Gabriella Ferraro, FWC South Region public information
coordinator, for more specific meeting times at 772-215-9459.
