Searchers are combing the area of the St. Johns River just south of the Shands Bridge in Clay County for a man who fell off a sailboat earlier today.

The 27-year-old man from the Miami area was refueling the boat when he fell into the river and disappeared, according to the man’s wife who was on the boat.

The boat was headed to Welaka from Jacksonville when the incident occurred.

Officers from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), Clay County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Coast Guard are conducting the search on water and from aircraft.

The FWC is the lead investigating agency.

Updates will follow.
