WORKSHOP FOCUSES ON WILDFIRE HOME SAFETY

Oct. 3, 2006
Contact: Lynne Flannery (863) 699-3742

Discovering how to keep your home safe from wildfire will be the topic of discussion during a workshop on Thursday, Oct. 12 at the Desoto City Volunteer Fire Department in Sebring.

The public is invited to the special Firewise Florida workshop, which begins at 10 a.m. and ends at noon. The workshop is presented by the Florida Division of Forestry and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).

“As development continues to expand, more houses are built in the urban/wildland interface. Firewise teaches homeowners simple techniques to reduce potential wildfire damage to their property,” said Lynne Flannery, FWC Ridge Rangers coordinator.

Melissa Yunas, a forestry wildfire mitigation specialist, will speak about fire’s natural role in Florida’s ecology, the importance of prescribed burning and wildfire home protection.

Participants will receive free materials, including Smokey the Bear giveaways. Registration for this program is requested to ensure enough materials are available for every participant. To register, call Flannery at (863) 699-3742.
