Public Access

The area is open to public access year round; road conditions vary from good to poor from unit to unit and within each unit. Four-wheel drive may be necessary at times.

Hunting Regulations and Maps 

 

Vehicle use regulations

 

Hickory Mound

  • All persons shall enter and exit the area only at designated entrances. The Painted Rock Road entrance may be used only during the general gun season.
  • Motorized vehicles may be operated only on named or numbered roads from September 1 through April 30, except that Ward Tram will be open to vehicles only during the general gun season. From May 1 through August 31, motorized vehicles may be operated only on Cow Creek Grade, Coker Road, J.C. Franklin Grade and Swartz Tram west of J.C. Franklin Grade.
  • Airboats and vehicles are prohibited inside the Hickory Mound Impoundment.
  • Gas-powered outboard motors are prohibited in the Hickory Mound Impoundment from August 31 through March 31; gas-powered motors of 4 h.p. or less are allowed April 1 through August 30.
  • Parked vehicles may not obstruct a road, gate or firelane.
  • No motor vehicle shall be operated on any part of any wildlife management area that has been designated as closed to vehicular traffic.
  • Motorcycles and ATVs may only be operated on roads open to other motor vehicles.

Spring Creek

  • All persons shall enter and exit the area only at designated entrances.
  • Motorized vehicles may be operated only on named or numbered roads from September 1 through April 30.  From May 1 through August 31, motorized vehicles may be operated only on Spring Creek Road, Rock Road, Swamp Spur, Mule Wallow Spur and Road Spurs 1, 2 and 3.
  • Parked vehicles may not obstruct a road, gate or firelane.
  • No motor vehicle shall be operated on any part of any wildlife management area that has been designated as closed to vehicular traffic.
  • All-terrain vehicles and motorcycles may only be operated on roads open to other motor vehicles.

Tide Swamp

  • All persons shall enter and exit the area only at designated entrances.
  • During the archery, muzzleloading gun, general gun and spring turkey seasons no person shall enter or exit the area except through the designated check stations on the Dallus Creek Road and Tide City Mainline.
  • Motorized vehicles may be operated only on named or numbered roads from September 1 through April 30. From May 1 through August 31, all motorized vehicles shall be operated only on Dallus Creek Road, Hagen's Cove Road, Tide City Mainline, Turkey Track Tram, Pine Island Road, Indian Island Road and Bridge Road.
  • The use of ATVs is prohibited.
  • Parked vehicles may not obstruct a road, gate, or firelane.
  • No motor vehicle shall be operated on any part of any wildlife management area that has been designated as closed to vehicular traffic.

Jena

  • From November 1 through April 30 on that portion of the WMA south of C.R. 358, west of Gentle Woods Road (north of Rocky Creek) and west of C.R. 361 (south of Rocky Creek) vehicles may be operated only on named or numbered roads; during the remainder of the year vehicles may be operated only on Sand Ridge Road, Road No. 2, and Sink Creek Road and Rocky Creek Landing Road. On remaining portions of the area, vehicles may be operated only on established roads.
  • Parked vehicles may not obstruct a road, gate, or firelane.
  • No motor vehicle shall be operated on any part of any wildlife management area that has been designated as closed to vehicular traffic.
  • Motorcycles and ATVs may only be operated on roads open to other motor vehicles.

Snipe Island

  • During archery, muzzleloading gun, general gun and spring turkey seasons, no person shall enter or exit the area except through designated entrances.
  • Vehicles shall be operated only on named or numbered roads from September 1 through April 30. From May 1 to August 31, vehicles shall be operated only on Mandalay Road and Snipe Island Grade.
  • The use of airboats, ATVs, tracked vehicles or unlicensed and unregistered motorcycles is prohibited.
  • Horses are allowed only during periods closed to hunting.
  • Parked vehicles may not obstruct a road, gate or firelane.
  • No motor vehicle shall be operated on any part of any wildlife management area that has been designated as closed to vehicular traffic.

Rules Regarding Dogs

 

Hickory Mound

  • For purposes other than hunting, dogs are allowed, but must be kept under physical restraint at all times. Dogs are prohibited in areas posted as "Closed to Public Access" by FWC administrative action. No person shall allow any dog to pursue or molest any wildlife during any period in which the taking of wildlife by the use of dogs is prohibited.
  • Hunting dogs may be taken onto the WMA after 8 a.m. the day before the opening of a season and shall be removed by 6 p.m. one day after the end of the season. Hunting deer with dogs is allowed during the general gun season. Hunting with dogs is allowed during the general gun and small game seasons.  Hunting with dogs is prohibited (including deer dog training) during the archery season. Dogs are prohibited in areas posted as "Closed to Public Access" by FWC administrative action. No person shall allow any dog to pursue or molest any wildlife during any period in which the taking of wildlife by the use of dogs is prohibited. Dogs on leashes may be used for trailing wounded game.

Jena

  • For purposes other than hunting, dogs are allowed, but must be kept under physical restraint at all times. Dogs are prohibited in areas posted as "Closed to Public Access" by FWC administrative action. No person shall allow any dog to pursue or molest any wildlife during any period in which the taking of wildlife by the use of dogs is prohibited.
  • Hunting dogs may be taken onto the WMA after 8 a.m. the day before the opening of a season and shall be removed by 6 p.m. one day after the end of the season. Hunting with dogs is allowed during the general gun and small game seasons. During the general gun season, dogs used for hunting deer must have a shoulder height of 17 inches or less. Dogs are prohibited in areas posted as "Closed to Public Access" by FWC administrative action. No person shall allow any dog to pursue or molest any wildlife during any period in which the taking of wildlife by the use of dogs is prohibited. Dogs on leashes may be used for trailing wounded game.

Snipe Island

  • For purposes other than hunting, dogs are allowed, but must be kept under physical restraint at all times. Dogs are prohibited in areas posted as "Closed to Public Access" by FWC administrative action. No person shall allow any dog to pursue or molest any wildlife during any period in which the taking of wildlife by the use of dogs is prohibited.
  • Hunting dogs may be taken onto the WMA after 8 a.m. the day before the opening of a season and shall be removed by 6 p.m. one day after the end of the season. Hunting deer or wild hog with dogs is prohibited. Hunting with dogs other than bird dogs and waterfowl retrievers is prohibited. Spring Creek

Dogs on leashes may be used for trailing wounded game.

Tide Swamp

  • For purposes other than hunting, dogs are allowed, but must be kept under physical restraint at all times. No person shall allow any dog to pursue or molest any wildlife during any period in which the taking of wildlife by the use of dogs is prohibited.

Five separate tracts that extend from the mouth of the Aucilla River at the north to just past the town of Horseshoe Beach on the south.

Nearest Cities/Towns

The five units of the Big Bend WMA extend about 60 miles along the Gulf coast. Tallahassee is located approximately 40 miles north of the northernmost unit, Hickory Mound.  Perry and Steinhatchee are located about midway. Horseshoe Beach is near the southern boundary of the southernmost unit, Jena.
