The 566-acre Little Gator Creek Wildlife and Environmental Area was purchased for the protection and management of the endangered wood stork. On the area is one of the largest wood stork nesting sites outside of south Florida. Wood storks have been nesting intermittently in the area for at least the past 70 years. For the protection of the wood stork and other wading birds, public access is limited.

"In a part of Florida known mainly for Disney World and other popular theme parks, central Florida's natural landscape has much to offer anyone interested in a quieter interlude." Jeff Ripple, Florida, The Natural Wonders
