Florida Beach-Nesting Birds Website: Help us conserver shorebirds & seabirds in Florida (photo by Jack Rogers)

Welcome to the Florida Beach-Nesting Birds Website

Launched in 2005, this site was created to provide a standard protocol and data entry interface for the many individuals, agencies, and conservation organizations that monitor beach-nesting birds in Florida.

The online database allows you to map locations of solitary nests or colonies and later add monitoring observations from subsequent visits to these sites. Once your data is entered, it is readily available to anyone with internet access thereby allowing researchers, conservationists, managers, and permit reviewers to use your information to help conserve beach-nesting birds.

Purpose

We currently know little about the status of Florida's breeding shorebirds and seabirds, but given the continuous expansion of coastal development in Florida, their numbers have certainly experienced dramatic declines. The purpose of this website is to consolidate all shorebird/seabird data getting collected in Florida in an attempt to ascertain where birds are breeding in the state (distribution) and how well they are doing (status).

This knowledge will allow informed management decisions to be made. We need to know where sites are and their relative importance in order to better target our efforts especially when manpower and resources are limited. Our coverage in the state is far from complete, and we need you or your agency/organization to assist us in our endeavor. See what's involved below.

Get Involved

What our program asks from contributors:

  1. Register (see below)
  2. Expected to visit sites regularly (particularly peak times, see survey protocol)
  3. Can reliably identify Florida's breeding shorebirds/seabirds (see list)
  4. Required to input their data into the online database.
  5. Participate in management activities (i.e. posting) optional

A statewide partnership network is steadily being developed in Florida. To learn more or find partners in your area, see our partners or contact the shorebird partnership coordinator.
