Bay Scallop Dissected
Like other bivalves, the two valves, or shells, of the bay scallop
are secreted by the thin tissue called the mantle. These valves are
joined at the hinge by a ligament, and connected by a cylindrical
muscle. By contracting this muscle, the scallop can open and close
the two shells.
Bay scallops are hermaphroditic organisms with both male and female
reproductive organs. In the image above the "ripe" gonad contains
the orange eggs and white sperm.
