Regional Red Tide Summaries (May 17, 2013)

East Region: Karenia brevis, the Florida red tide organism, was not found in water samples collected this week in the Indian River Lagoon (Brevard County) or alongshore of Duval, Broward and Dade counties.

Last week, a bloom of the brown tide organism Aureoumbra lagunensis was detected in the Northern Indian River Lagoon and Mosquito Lagoon (Brevard County). No samples were collected this week from that area.

Northwest RegionKarenia brevis, the Florida red tide organism, was not detected in samples collected this week inshore and alongshore of Escambia, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa, Walton, Bay, Gulf, and Dixie counties or offshore of Dixie and Levy counties.  Two samples collected in St. Joe Bay (Gulf County) contained background concentrations of K. brevis.

Southwest Region: Karenia brevis, the Florida red tide organism, was found in background to very low concentrations in several samples collected alongshore and inshore of Pinellas, Hillsborough, Manatee, Sarasota and Lee counties this week. Other samples collected throughout southwest Florida did not contain K. brevis.

The FWRI Red Tide Status Line is now available to callers to hear a recording detailing red tide conditions throughout the state. FWRI updates the recording each Friday by 5 p.m. after sampling efforts for the week have been completed and analyzed. Red Tide Status Line: (866) 300-9399 (toll-free inside Florida only); (727) 552-2448 (outside Florida).

Google Earth Maps

FWC Facts:
The average Florida manatee is about 10 ft. long and close to 1,200 lbs. They can reach up to 13 ft. and 3,500 lbs. Calves are 3-4 ft. long & weigh 60-70 lbs. at birth.
