Regional Red Tide Summaries (May 24, 2013)

East Region: Karenia brevis, the Florida red tide organism, was not found in water samples collected this week in the Indian River Lagoon (Brevard and Volusia counties), inshore of Duval and Clay counties or alongshore of Palm Beach and Dade counties.

A bloom of the brown tide organism Aureoumbra lagunensis has been detected in the Northern Indian River Lagoon and Mosquito Lagoon (Brevard County) for the past two weeks.

Northwest Region: Karenia brevis, the Florida red tide organism, was not detected in samples collected this week alongshore of Okaloosa, Walton, Franklin, Levy and Citrus counties or offshore of Okaloosa County. Two samples collected in St. Andrews Bay (Bay County) and one collected in St. Joe Bay (Gulf County) each contained background concentrations of K. brevis.

Southwest Region:Karenia brevis, the Florida red tide organism, was found in background concentrations in several samples collected alongshore, inshore and offshore of Pinellas, Hillsborough, Manatee, Sarasota, Charlotte and Lee counties this week. One sample collected alongshore of Pinellas County contained very low concentrations. Other samples collected throughout southwest Florida did not contain K. brevis.

The FWRI Red Tide Status Line is now available to callers to hear a recording detailing red tide conditions throughout the state. FWRI updates the recording each Friday by 5 p.m. after sampling efforts for the week have been completed and analyzed. Red Tide Status Line: (866) 300-9399 (toll-free inside Florida only); (727) 552-2448 (outside Florida).
