Scar acquisition

Scar acquisition is one of the many aspects of manatee life history that can be analyzed by resighting individuals over time. Here are two images of TB139, Lance. The image of the left was taken in 1999, and the image on the right was taken in 2005.

Manatees in captivity have been known to live for more than 50 years. Distinctively scarred individuals in the wild have been known to live for at least 39 years.
