The Salt Lake Wildlife Management Area (WMA) encompasses more than 7,800 acres in Brevard County. It borders three lakes—South Lake, Salt Lake, and Loughman Lake. A former cattle ranch, Salt Lake WMA is now managed by the FWC. It is owned jointly by the St. Johns River Water Management District and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. You will find a diverse range of natural communities here, including freshwater marsh, oak scrub, scrubby flatwoods, mesic flatwoods, and oak/cabbage palm hammocks. You can hunt abundant feral hogs and turkey, and hike, ride bicycles or horses, or picnic in the quiet of the pretty hammock on the edge of South Lake. Perhaps you’ll glimpse the rare Florida scrub-jay in recently burned scrub or see a bald eagle flying overhead.
