At present, recreational facilities or trails have not be developed on this site in order to protect the site's sensitive natural resources. In the future, recreation and education opportunities may be considered for some of the area, but only insofar as these activities will not jeopardize the plants and animals that depend on these sensitive habitats.

There are 10 state parks where natural communities and wildlife may be observed. These parks provide a variety of recreational opportunities and facilities ranging from guided nature walks, glass-bottom boat tours, snorkeling, paddling, fishing, and camping. Peruse the Southeast listings of State Parks. In addition there are three national wildlife refuges in the Keys where public access is permitted. Almost all the lands of the National Key Deer Refuge are accessible to the public as are many of the beaches of the Key West National Wildlife Refuge. Several of the islands in the Great White Heron National Wildlife Refuge are accessible to the public with a special use permit.
