Twin Rivers Wildlife Management Area

Twin Rivers consists of more than 9,000 acres in 14 noncontiguous tracts in Madison, Hamilton, and Suwannee counties. Most of the land is in the 100-year floodplain of the Withlacoochee and Suwannee rivers. Natural communities include river bottom hardwoods, upland hardwoods, natural pines, and pine plantations. Portions of the Florida Trail follow the Suwannee River, where alligator, otter, and beaver may be observed. This area is a site on the Great Florida Birding Trail. Hunting, Fishing, wildlife viewing, canoeing, horseback riding, hiking, bicycling, and picnicking are permitted. A quota hunt permit is required to hunt in this area where deer hunting is excellent. Camping is prohibited during periods open to hunting. Permits are required for camping during non-hunting periods. The Division of Forestry issues camping permits. Blue Springs Unit of Twin Rivers Wildlife Management Area

The Blue Springs Unit is one of 14 tracts located in western Hamilton County. These nearly 2,000 acres are covered in sandhills and pine plantations. Bird dog training opportunities are available on Tuesdays and Thursdays in October, and a free daily permit is required. Miles of marked trail roads provide opportunities for wildlife viewing, hiking, bicycling, and horseback riding. Gopher tortoise, indigo snake, brown-headed nuthatch, turkey, white-tailed deer, and northern bobwhite are some of the wildlife species that can be seen on the area. This area is a site on the Great Florida Birding Trail. Numerous picnic areas are located on the area. Camping is prohibited during bird dog training but is allowed by landowner permit during other periods. Contact the Division of Forestry at (386) 208-1461 for more information.
