Fred C. Babcock - Cecil M. Webb Wildlife Management Area

Description:
This WMA is dominated by open stands of slash pine flatwoods and seasonally flooded prairies and marshes that are rich with wildflowers. Prescribed fires are conducted and water levels controlled to improve habitat for wildlife.

Watchable wildlife:
Twenty-four family groups of red-cockaded woodpeckers live here, their cavity trees marked with a white-painted ring. The flatwoods rustle with the movements of northern bobwhite, rabbits, gray squirrels, raccoons, and white-tailed deer around dusk and dawn. Wading birds forage in wet prairies and marshes throughout the day. Look for common ground doves, loggerhead shrikes, red-winged blackbirds, and eastern meadowlarks. Winter brings American woodcocks and common snipe down from the North.
