Description: Palm and pine hammocks dot the landscape surrounding a large, brackish impoundment on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico encircled by a 6.5-mile dike.
Watchable wildlife: You can walk or drive on the levee surrounding the impoundment to view green-winged teal, blue-winged teal, northern pintail, gadwall, mallard, American wigeon, northern shoveler, black duck, canvasback, redhead, ring-necked duck, lesser and greater scaup, common goldeneye, bufflehead, and hooded and red-breasted merganser. Snow geese and swans occasionally overwinter. There are many raptors during various seasons of the year, including American swallow-tailed and Mississippi kites, bald eagles, and ospreys. Wading birds are usually present, and alligators spend their time basking on warm days year-round.

Directions: From Perry, travel eighteen miles west on U.S. Highway 98, then turn left on Cow Creek Grade. Travel six miles on limerock road to check station. A map and regulation summary can be obtained at the check station. Proceed two miles to impoundment.
