Description:
This 31-mile auto tour follows the paved roads of the Apalachee Savannahs Scenic Byway in a loop through the southwest portion of the forest. You will see spectacular flower displays scattered among longleaf pine flatwoods, cypress swamps, and prairie savannahs. The forest boasts the world's largest concentration of red-cockaded woodpecker colonies.
Watchable wildlife:
The best times of year to see birds and wildflowers is in late spring and early fall. Resident birds include woodpeckers (pileated, red-bellied, and downy), pine warblers, brown-headed nuthatches, and northern bobwhites. Early in the morning and in the evening, you may see wild turkeys, fox squirrels, and white-tailed deer.
