Birding Hot Spot and Great Florida Birding Trail site Description:
Fort Clinch is located on the northern tip of Amelia Island, Florida's northernmost barrier island. Amelia island's natural communities is typical of that found in many southeastern coastal areas. It includes high dunes, white quartz sand beaches, salt marshes and meandering tidal creeks, and coastal hammocks. There is a nature trail and a long pier for viewing wildlife.
Watchable wildlife:
From the pier, you will see many shorebirds, gulls (including herring, great black-backed, ring-billed, and laughing), and terns. A nearby stone jetty is a popular loafing spot for brown pelicans and double-crested cormorants. The nature trail winds through a coastal oak hammock, where you may see woodland songbirds, particularly during spring migration. A small pond holds turtles and alligators.
