FWC approves comprehensive bear management rules

Numerous recent articles and editorials have addressed the FWC's bear management program. Much of the writing has focused on the proposal to reinstate limited bear hunting in Florida. FWC staff and Commissioners welcome and respect the diversity of opinions, questions and input regarding this proposal, but some of the writing has including false or misleading information. I offer this document to provide a factual perspective on FWC's comprehensive approach to bear management and the proposed bear hunting season. 

Free bowhunting education course offered in Miami-Dade County

Free hunter safety course offered in Jefferson County

June 18, 2015 

The course takes place at Beau Turner Youth Conservation Center, 9194 S. Jefferson Highway, Monticello. Instruction is from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST, June 27. The range portion of the class will be June 28 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the same location. Students must be present both days in order to complete the course. 

FWC to meet June 23-25 in Sarasota

June 16, 2015 

The Commission will meet June 23-25 in the Hyatt Regency, 1000 Boulevard of the Arts, Sarasota. All sessions are open to members of the public who want to attend. The half-day session Tuesday, June 23, starts at 1:30 p.m. The sessions on Wednesday and Thursday start at 8:30 a.m.  

Free bowhunting education course offered in Palm Beach County

June 16, 2015 

Students will learn about safe and responsible tree stand usage, big game shot placement and recovery. The course will provide students with hands-on experience shooting a bow and arrow on the range 

Free hunter safety course offered in Broward and Hendry counties

June 16, 2015 

Students must complete the Internet course before coming to class and bring a copy of the final report from the online portion of the course. The final report form does not have to be notarized. 

FWC data show increase in bear population

June 10, 2015 

In the North BMU, the study shows the black bear population estimate is more than 500 bears, more than double the estimate from 2002. In the Central BMU, the population estimate is more than 1,200 bears, an increase of nearly 30 percent over the previous estimate.

Free hunter safety Internet-completion course offered in Monroe County

The course will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 21 at Kiffney’s Firearms & Indoor Range, 105910 Overseas Highway, Mile Marker 106, Key Largo.
