Chronic Wasting Disease, or CWD as it’s more commonly called, has most recently been detected in Mississippi. This is the closest the fatal deer disease has been to our Florida border. 

FWC waives rules in response to red tide cleanup

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) continues to monitor the red tide affecting southwest Florida. Red tides are common along Florida’s Gulf coast, and fish populations have been resilient to the impact even after severe and prolonged red tide events. 

East coast blue crab trap closures start Aug. 10

Recreational and commercial blue crab traps must be removed from certain state waters on the east coast of Florida prior to Aug. 10, the first day of two 10-day trap closures occurring this month. 

FWC Aug. 14 workshop in Santa Rosa County encourages local governments to conserve gopher tortoises

Reminder: State waters off Pasco County remain open to bay scallop harvest through Sunday, July 29, and waters will be closed to harvest beginning Monday, July 30. 

Greater amberjack and gray triggerfish reopen to recreational harvest in Gulf waters Aug. 1

July 27, 2018 

The recreational harvest of greater amberjack and gray triggerfish will reopen in Gulf state and federal waters Aug. 1. The amberjack season will remain open through Oct. 31 in state waters. The triggerfish season will remain open through Dec. 31 in state waters.
