4 Florida counties open April 1 to gag grouper recreational harvest; FWC gathering input on changes to this season

March 27, 2017 

State waters off the coast of Franklin, Wakulla, Jefferson and Taylor counties will open to recreational harvest of gag grouper starting April 1. This regional season will remain open through June 30. The season also includes all waters of Apalachicola Bay and Indian Pass, including those in Gulf County, and all waters of the Steinhatchee River, including those in Dixie County. 

FWC documents panther kittens north of Caloosahatchee River

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has verified the presence of at least two panther kittens north of the Caloosahatchee River in southwest Florida. These kittens are presumed to be the offspring of the first wild female panther documented north of the river since 1973. 

Hunter safety courses offered in April

Spiny lobster season closes April 1

The spiny lobster recreational and commercial season closes to harvest in state and federal waters starting April 1, and will reopen Aug. 6.

Free fishing derby for youth at Tenoroc Fish Management Area

This event, sponsored by the FWC, does not require a fishing license. However, derby participants must preregister. 

Summer jobs available at Ocala Outdoor Adventure Camp

This residential summer camp offers fun, educational and hands-on activities, such as fishing, canoeing, swimming, hiking and hunter safety, and inspires campers to become good stewards of fish and wildlife resources.  

Keep a lookout for manatees in motion this spring

From April 1 through Nov. 15, seasonal manatee zones require boaters to slow down in certain areas to prevent manatees from being struck by motorboats or personal watercraft.
