Free Kids’ Fishing Clinic promises day of learning, fun

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) will offer a free Kids’ Fishing Clinic for children between the ages of 5 and 15 from 9 a.m. to noon March 26 at Sunglow Fishing Pier, 3701 S. Atlantic Ave., Daytona Beach. 

FWC plans treatment of invasive plants near boat ramp on Deer Point Lake

The FWC will treat an invasive aquatic plan known as giant salvinia or salvinia molesta on Deer Point Lake in Bay County. The first treatment will be on March 10, weather permitting, followed by additional treatments as deemed necessary.  

Be a citizen-scientist: Help FWC monitor horseshoe crabs spawning on beaches

Beachgoers lucky enough to spot horseshoe crabs are asked to note how many they see and whether the horseshoe crabs are mating. In addition, biologists ask observers to provide the date, time, location, habitat type and environmental conditions – such as tides and moon phase – when a sighting occurs. 

FWC’s Tenoroc Public Shooting Range reopens March 13

Tenoroc Public Shooting Range, located in Polk County between Tampa and Orlando, is reopening its rifle and pistol ranges March 13 after undergoing improvements. The target shooting center features rifle and pistol ranges and shotgun opportunities with trap and sporting clays facilities. 

FWC to improve aids to navigation at Suwannee River entrance channels

The FWC has scheduled improvements to the aids to navigation that mark the Suwannee River entrance channels at Alligator Pass, McGriff Channel/Wadley Pass and Salt Creek.

A 10-year plan for the management of Fort White Wildlife and Environmental Area will be presented at a public hearing in Gilchrist County on Thursday, March 10. People are invited to the 7 p.m. public hearing at the Board of County Commissioners meeting facility, 210 S. Main Street, Trenton.

March offers peak fishing for many of Florida’s freshwater fishes!

The TrophyCatch program clearly shows that submissions of bass heavier than 8 pounds, which are caught in Florida, documented and released, peaks each March. This is similar to other sunfishes, which are in the same family of fish as bass and include bream and crappie. 

Exotic Pet Amnesty Day set for March 12 at Zoo Miami

The FWC and Zoo Miami are holding an Exotic Pet Amnesty Day on March 12. This free event is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in front of the zoo at 12400 SW 152 St. in Miami.
