Workshop set for gopher tortoise conservation in northeast Florida

The goal of these workshops is to identify ways counties and cities can participate in protecting one of Florida’s threatened species. In addition, the FWC will discuss financial incentives available for local governments. 

The Great Outdoors Day Free Kids’ Fishing Derby is July 25 in Kissimmee

July 21, 2015 

The derby is Saturday, July 25, from 9:30-11:00 a.m. for children ages 5-15, at the Kissimmee Civic Center Pond, 201 E. Dakin Ave., Kissimmee, FL 34741. An FWC biologist will be on hand to assist participants. Bait and fishing equipment will be provided but children are welcome to bring their own. 

Discarded monofilament line injures, kills wildlife

July 21, 2015 

Tackle should be checked frequently for frayed line that may easily break. Unwanted or damaged line should be stored safely and securely until it can be placed in a recycling bin. If you see discarded monofilament line while you are out, pick it up, secure it and dispose of it appropriately.

Sea turtles range in size from the 75- to 100-pound Kemp’s ridley to the 1,300-pound, 8-foot-long leatherback.
