FWC commends recently approved Seminole County bear ordinance

December 10, 2015 

The FWC commends Seminole County on its unanimous vote to approve an ordinance that will help deter bears from lingering in Seminole County neighborhoods. The ordinance requires residents to take precautions to remove food attractants such as unsecured garbage, and encourages the use of bear-resistant trash receptacles.  

FWC investigates bird deaths on Neptune Beach

December 10, 2015 

The FWC received reports about the dead birds over Thanksgiving weekend. Many of the birds were too decomposed to determine cause of death, so officials are unsure what happened to the animals. 

Snook harvest seasonal closure in Atlantic starts Dec. 15

December 09, 2015 

The recreational harvest season for snook closes Dec. 15 in Atlantic state and federal waters, including Lake Okeechobee and the Kissimmee River, and will remain closed through Jan. 31, 2016, reopening to harvest Feb. 1. Snook can be caught and released during the closed season. 

Hunter safety Internet-completion courses offered in January

FWC ‘releases’ snakes throughout Florida as part of 2016 Python Challenge™

The FWC is conducting a Virtual Snake Finding Mission, “releasing” toy snakes near popular Florida landmarks in an effort to raise awareness about nonnative species in Florida. The search for the toy snakes ̶ which are superimposed on pictures of Florida landmarks ̶ is part of the 2016 Python Challenge™.  

TrophyCatch awards a bass boat package

The FWC randomly selected Ed Prather as winner of a Phoenix 619 Pro bass boat and trailer that came with a 200-horsepower Mercury outboard, MotorGuide trolling motor and Power-Pole anchoring system. This year, Bartow Ford added a surprise gift of $1,000 towards the purchase of one of their vehicles to pull the boat.

TrophyCatch prepares to announce winner of a bass boat package

On Dec. 5, at approximately 1 p.m. at the Bartow Ford Winter Wonderland event in north Bartow, FWC staff will conduct a random drawing among five TrophyCatch finalists to see who wins a $40,000 Phoenix bass boat.
