New hunters looking for help and those with
experience wanting to sharpen their skills will find it worthwhile
to attend the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's
(FWC) Youth Hunting Field Day on Saturday, Sept. 11 at Tall Timbers
Research Station and Land Conservancy, north of Tallahassee.
The FWC will partner with Tall Timbers and the Big
Bend Youth Outdoor Foundation to put on this free, half-day event
for interested kids of all ages and their parents. Advance
registration is not necessary for the event, which runs from 10
a.m. to 3 p.m.
At noon, expert instructors will teach the
fundamentals of hunting in Florida for big game - deer, hog and
turkey. At 1 p.m., a similar session will offer tips on how
to hunt waterfowl and small game. Attendees will get to shoot
at targets with bows and arrows, shotguns, rifles and muzzleloading
guns and learn about wildlife identification.
Also, those who have taken the online hunter safety
course can complete the required field activities at the event by
registering at MyFWC.com/HunterSafety.
Other activities include a K-9 demonstration by FWC
law enforcement officers and their dogs, and a hunting-dog
demonstration. Participants are eligible for door prizes,
including a youth hunt or a free week of summer camp in Ocala or at
the Beau Turner
Youth Conservation Center (BTYCC), near Tallahassee.
The BTYCC is part of the Florida Youth Conservation
Centers Network initiative to create youth centers that will
provide opportunities for young people and families to participate
in outdoor activities and share experiences that strengthen
connections with and support for fish and wildlife
conservation.
The Sept. 11 Youth Hunting Field Day sponsors and
volunteers include the Future of Hunting in Florida, the National
Wild Turkey Federation, Talquin Portable Restrooms, Plantation
Security Inc., Ducks Unlimited, Jefferson Long Rifles, Tallahassee
Bowhunters Association, Horse Creek Traditional Archery Club,
Quality Deer Management Association, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service, Safari Club International, the Florida Division of
Forestry and Hard Labor Creek.
