The
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is involved
in a variety of activities associated with Bald Eagles. This includes
documentation of eagle nesting territories, technical assistance requests,
and scientific research. More information is provided below.
The number of active bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) nesting
territories documented in 2006 was 1,113. Individuals interested in
obtaining information regarding status and location of active bald eagle
nesting territories may visit the Eagle
Nest Locator on the FWC website or contact the Bald
Eagle Nest Data Coordinator.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) along with
the U.S. Fish Wildlife Service (USFWS) work in conjunction to provide
technical assistance to the public in regards to development or timber
harvest issues in the vicinity of a bald eagle nest. Individuals seeking
technical assistance should first review the USFWS document entitled “Clearance
to Proceed with Construction Activities Adjacent to Bald Eagle Nest”
in order to determine whether technical assistance is required. If a
project does not meet the parameters of this clearance letter, the
individual should then contact the
appropriate USFWS representative for their region.
Documents developed by the USFWS in order to address the issues of
human/eagle related conflicts are The
Habitat Management Guidelines For the Bald Eagle In The Southeast Region
and the Bald
Eagle Monitoring Guidelines developed in 2002 for documenting and
evaluating bald eagle response to human development activities.
