ED MOYER TAKES REINS OF FWC FISHERIES DIVISION
The Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has a new fisheries director. Ed Moyer, regional director of the Panama City office, assumed the post in Tallahassee on May 15.
Moyer replaced Dr. Jerome V. Shireman who held the fisheries post since August 1995. Shireman retired from the FWC on March 27.
The new fisheries director said he hopes to increase fishing opportunities for anglers and try to make fishing a family-oriented activity.
"I'd like to open more fishing areas that are convenient to families throughout the state so they can spend more time fishing," he said. "In addition, I want to continue Dr. Shireman's efforts in providing quality and trophy fishing opportunities for our traditional anglers."
Moyer began his career with the FWC in 1973 as a fish management specialist in Eustis. He spent most of his time with the FWC in Kissimmee holding numerous positions. Most recently he was involved in the regional lake restoration program which oversaw major drawdowns of lakes Jackson, Kissimmee and East and West Tohopekaliga.
He graduated from the University of Florida in 1967 with a bachelor of science degree in microbiology. In 1975, he studied zoology at Florida Southern University in Lakeland.
Moyer is certified as a fisheries scientist by the American Fisheries Society and is a member of the Florida Aquatic Plant Management Society.
Moyer and his wife, Jane, have two sons, Matthew, 23, and Michael, 19.
