FREE FISHING DERBY MEANS FUN FOR KIDS

Hey kids, let's go fishing! It's time for the annual Lake Eaton Fishing Derby at the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's (FWC) Youth Conservation Camp in the Ocala National Forest. The derbies are free for kids ages 5-12 and will be held on Sat., May 6 and Sat., May 13 from 9 a.m., until noon both days.

"All bait and tackle will be provided for the participants, as well as instruction for those who need it," said Joy M. Hill, FWC's Central Region public information coordinator.

FWC biologists plan to stock a couple of thousand catfish for the events in an area of the lake that will be closed to general fishing just prior to and during the derbies. For safety reasons, only the cane poles provided at the derby will be allowed - please leave your rods and reels at home.

In addition to fishing at the derby, there will be a casting contest and other activities, including Bugs and Critters where the kids get to wade into the lake with dip nets and learn about what they scoop up! There will also be lunch for all the kids, said Hill.

"Fishing is something that all family members can enjoy together, and these derbies provide a great opportunity to introduce your kids to this fun and wholesome activity," said Hill.

Pre-registration is required because space for each event is limited to 100 participants on a first-come, first-served basis. Please register for only one event so that more kids will get a chance to participate. To register call Judy Moats at FWC's Ocala office at (352) 732-1225 between 8 a.m., and 5 p.m., weekdays.

The Youth Conservation Camp is located about seven miles north of SR40 off CR314 in the Ocala National Forest.
