FREE FISHING DERBY MEANS FUN FOR KIDS Hey kids, let's go fishing! It's time for the annual Lake Eaton Kids' Fishing
Derby at the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's (FWC) Hunter
Education Training Center in the Ocala National Forest. The derby is free for
kids ages 5-12 and will be held on Sat., April 14 from 8:30 a.m. until noon. "All bait and tackle will be provided for the participants, as well as
instruction for those who need it," said Joy M. Hill, FWC's Northeast
Region public information coordinator. FWC biologists plan to stock 4,000 catfish for the event in an area of Lake
Eaton that will be closed to general fishing just prior to and during the
derbies. For safety reasons, only the cane poles provided at the derby will be
allowed - please leave your rods and reels at home. In addition to fishing at the derby, there will be a casting contest and
other activities, including Bugs and Critters where the kids get to wade into
the lake with dip nets and learn about what they scoop up! Linda Little Wolf, an
author and speaker on Native American culture, will entertain the children with
her stories of the country's first residents and have some actual artifacts on
hand. There will also be lunch for the kids, said Hill. "Fishing is something that all family members can enjoy together, and
this derby provides a great opportunity to introduce your kids to this fun and
wholesome activity," said Hill. Pre-registration is required because space is limited to 100 participants on
a first-come, first-served basis. To register call the FWC's Ocala office at
(352) 732-1225 between 8 a.m., and 5 p.m., weekdays. The Hunter Education Training Center is located about seven miles north of
SR40 off CR314 in the Ocala National Forest.
