Pre-Season Survey of
Central Florida 

Flight date:   15 November 2000


GARCIA/ANSIN (ST. JOHNS RIVER BASIN)

     Ansin was flooded but water is low.  The habitat consisted of open saw grass marsh with scattered cypress heads.  Approximately 50 teal, 50 coots, and 15 ring-necked ducks were observed.  
     Garcia was flooded and water levels appeared to be lower than normal.  Habitat consisted of open cattail marsh and
Atopped-out@ hydrilla in the southwest and west-central portions of the area.  This area should attract more birds if cold weather pushes them into the region.  Approximately 550 ring-necked ducks (ringers), 100 teal, 5 American wigeon, and 2500 coots were observed on the area. 

STICK MARSH/FARM 13 (ST. J0HNS RIVER BASIN)

Water depth is below normal with hydrilla in the very south and west of Farm 13.  Hydrilla areas were holding approximately 100 teal, 550 ringers, 25 wigeon, and 1500 coots.  Stick Marsh has very little hydrilla.

T.M. GOODWIN WATERFOWL MANAGEMENT AREA

Due to the drought, water is limited.  500 teal were observed on the northern half of the area.

SARRTORI BLOCK (ST. J0HNS RIVER BASIN)

West half of block remains heavily vegetated with little water.  The east side still has open water with some hydrilla.  No ducks were observed on this area.

MAPLE HEADS SOUTHEAST OF THREE FORKS AREA (ST. J0HNS RIVER BASIN)


Area has no water and no ducks.

LAKE HELL=N BLAZES (ST. J0HNS RIVER BASIN)

No hydrilla and no ducks. 

LITTLE SAWGRASS AND SAWGRASS LAKES 
(ST. J0HNS RIVER BASIN)

Most of Little and Big Sawgrass have some hydrilla.  Observed 250 coots.
 

LAKE WASHINGTON'S EAST MARSH 
(ST. J0HNS RIVER BASIN)


No water and no ducks.

LAKE WINDER (ST. J0HNS RIVER BASIN)

No hydrilla.  Observed 25 Florida mottled ducks on peripheral marsh areas.

LAKE POINSETT (ST. JOHNS RIVER BASIN)

No hydrilla and no ducks. 

ST. JOHNS RIVER FROM N. OF POINSETT TO HWY. 50

Habitat very dry.  A few teal (15) were observed using hydrilla along the river bank.

ST. JOHNS RIVER - SALT AND LOUGHMAN LAKE AREA

Low water.  Access is going to be difficult.  Some good habitat scattered throughout the area.  200 teal observed on the area.  May attract more if water remains or rain raises water level.  



ST. JOHNS RIVER - PUZZLE LAKE AREA

Water low, but habitat looked fairly good.  Access is going to be difficult due to low water.  5000 coots, 1000 teal, and 50 Florida mottled ducks were observed using the area.

EAST LAKE TOHOPEKELIGA

No ducks were observed using the lake.

LAKE TOHOPEKELIGA

Hydrilla on the east side of lake is holding 2,000 coots and 1,500 ringers. The area should attract more birds if cold weather pushes them into the region. 

LAKE HATCHINEHA

Approximately half the lake has hydrilla.  10,000 coots and 1,500 ringers observed on the hydrilla. The area should attract more birds if cold weather pushes them into the region. 

LAKE KISSIMMEE 

A little hydrilla around Brahma Island.  No ducks observed on the lake.  Water levels low.
