2009-2010 Decal:
   ~Florida's Sea Turtles ~
Loggerhead

You can help protect Florida's endangered and threatened marine turtles by making a donation to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.  Your donation will help fund research at the Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute and conservation efforts by the Imperiled Species Management Section.  With each donation of five dollars or more, you will receive your choice of one of the waterproof decals featured below.  Current year marine turtle decals are available at Florida County Tax Offices.

FWC has a limited supply of some of the earlier decals. We would like to offer them to individuals who are interested in collecting them. Please indicate the decals you would like to obtain by checking the appropriate area on the order form and sending a check for the number of decals selected.  The decals will be sent to you within 4-6 weeks.

Florida's sea turtles
"Loggerhead (Caretta caretta) at water's surface"
(No. 18 of a series)

Florida's coastal waters provide important foraging and developmental habitat for five species of threatened and endangered sea turtles, including the threatened loggerhead (Caretta caretta). Because they must rise to the surface to breathe, sea turtles of all species and sizes are vulnerable to being hit by boats. Please be aware of these protected species when boating in Florida’s waters, particularly just offshore of Atlantic and Gulf sandy beaches during the nesting season March through October. Sea turtles are also found in estuarine waters, particularly over grass beds.

  • All five species of sea turtles in Florida have been found with propeller wounds.
  • The number of sea turtles in Florida found each year with propeller wounds has risen from about 65 during the late 1980s to about 300.
  • Adult sea turtles washing ashore in Florida are more likely to have propeller wounds than turtles of other life stages.
  • Adult sea turtles with propeller wounds are found predominantly near major nesting beaches during the nesting season.
