Half Moon WMA

Recreation

In support of the resource management goals and objectives for the area and to provide a quality experience for all area users, the following recreation activities are allowed.

Hunting

Good small game, turkey, and hog hunting and excellent deer hunting opportunities are available. Approximately 200 acres of wildlife openings exist, and food plots or dove fields are planned for previously disturbed sites.

Hunting with dogs is prohibited except bird dogs and dogs with a shoulder height of 15 inches or less during the small game season.

Half Moon provides habitat to a very stable deer population with an estimated density of about 60 deer per square mile.

Fishing

Fish for largemouth bass, sunfish, and catfish in one of the 15 ponds on the area. These ponds were dug when the area was privately owned to provide water for cattle. A viewing deck/fishing dock can be accessed 2.5 miles inside area on main road. Fishing license information.

Wildlife Viewing

The interspersion of vegetation types on Half Moon attracts species that use two or more natural communities, resulting in a rich diversity of terrestrial vertebrates. Migratory warblers are abundant in March and April and also during fall migration. A viewing deck/fishing dock can be accessed 2.5 miles inside area on main road. Hiking

A multiple-use trail system exists on the tract; maps are available at the front gate. Foot traffic only is allowed south of Mill Creek on the portion of property owned by Southwest Florida Water Management District.

Biking

A multiple-use trail system exists on the tract; map brochures are available at the front gate. For much of its length, the trail follows the remains of an old logging tram through shady forest and swamp.

Horseback Riding

Horses are prohibited during archery, muzzleloading gun, general gun, and spring turkey seasons.  Children under the age of 16 are required to wear a helmet when riding on public lands.  For more detailed information go to Nicole's Law .  All horseback riders must have proof of current negative Coggins Test results for their horses when on state lands.

Paddling

Opportunities are available on the Withlachochee River and Gum Slough. No access available from the management area.
