Markers to post state manatee protection zones in Palm Beach County

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) began work Tuesday to restore and install new manatee protection zone markers (signs) in Palm Beach County.

Following an analysis of manatee protection zones, this project will ensure all the regulatory permits and rules are in order and all markers are placed properly. In some areas, additional markers and buoys will mark boundaries of existing regulatory zones more clearly.  The work also includes removing unauthorized or illegal markers, which can confuse boaters.

"Clearly marked zones improve operator compliance," said Capt. David G. Schaeffer of the FWC's Division of Law Enforcement. "The markers will get boats to slow down in areas where vessel congestion occurs and manatees frequent. This is beneficial to boaters and the manatees."

The FWC expects work on the markers to be completed this fall.
